(La Junta, CO) -- Two Southeast Colorado companies are gearing up for a community tradition, the SECPA & SECOM Charity Golf Classic. The tournament kicks off July 6th and play will happen on the 7th and the 8th with the women playing at the Rocky Ford Golf Course and the men hitting the links at the La Junta Golf Course. Money raised from the event goes back to local and regional charities and non-profits such as the Arkansas Valley Hospice, CASA and many more.
The Southeast Colorado Power Association and SECOM Golf Classic has been happening for 36 years. It was former Southeast Power General Manager Norman Bailey who started it and was originally titled the Jim Golden Open. Golden was a manager of another cooperative and highly respected in the co-op family.
In its infancy, the tournament featured men and woman playing together but as it grew it needed two separate courses. There are incentives and prizes for the golfers who participate in the annual event. Vendors who do business with both companies help sponsor the event. The SECPA/SECOM Charity Golf Classic has raised more than 220-thousand dollars over the years. The tournament also helps stimulate the local Arkansas Valley economy bringing foot traffic to local businesses during the tournament.
